Or: Why content matters

The Beginning
• For so many years, we networkers built networks by means
of wires and alike, i.e. infrastructure on OSI layer 1-3.
• But we didn't stop at hard- and software. We were also
building communities. Our customers were supposed to
understand themselves as our partners.

The Beginning
• Our customers were supposed to understand themselves
as our partners. This was our successful survival tactics
when the ISPs emerged. We knew our customers, they
knew us, and thus we were able to build a symbiotic
coexistence.

Expanding Scope
• Ten years ago some NREN representatives were surprised
to hear that AAI shifted into our focus. Today this singlesignon method is an international standard.

Expanding Scope
• Again we were listening to our partners, looking for
solutions, and again the solution was based on a strong
and solid partnership.

Meanwhile
• We continued listening to our partners.
• Maybe more people could benefit from communicating
beyond the borders of their own organization and profit
from a network of people with mutual interests?

Now
• So we are about to expand into the next realm.
• One of these communities are the E-Learning Centres.
They indeed do have needs for mutual services, like
– SWTICHcollection
– SWITCHcast
– Eduhub

Now
• One (not so) recently discovered species are the e-learning
specialists. We were looking into their everyday life,
listening to their needs and wishes, and we brought them
together to build our next community.

Next step
After the successes of the last years, as there are
• Eduhub
• SWITCHcast
• SWITCHcollection
… comes:
• Support for virtual organizations
