Becoming an Expert Student
The five key steps
The five key steps to get success in
studying
 P repare
 O rganize
 W ork
 E valuate
 R ethink
1st Step: Prepare

”Travelers taking a long journey must
begin with a single step”
Lao Tzu (Chinese philosopher)

In any case: Planning comes first
1st Step: Prepare



The trouble is that most planning is
done without concious thinking, as if
we are on autopilot
The key to success however, is to
make sure that planning is systematic
The best way to plan systematic is to
use goal-setting strategies
1st Step: Prepare

Goal-Setting-Strategies:





Set both short-term and long term goals
Make sure short and long term goalsfit
together
Make goals realistic
State goals which can be measured
Take ownership of your goals
1st Step: Prepare

Run test ”Try it! 3”

Working in groups:
Compare your goals for the course
with those of other students and
consider the similarities and
differences.

2nd Step: Organize


Based on your goal-setting you need to
organize the tools you need to reach your
goals:
Physical Organization:



Books, materials, papers etc
Pen, computer, printer etc
Intellectual Organization:


Creating/checking basic knowledge of the topic
Get in the right mood/feeling to work
2nd Step: Organize
Intellectual Tools:




Too often students are in a hurry to
meet a deadline! They just dive in and
get it done!
Organizing can save you time, as you
are not loosing your way
Success comes not from trial and error
We can often make our own luck
through preparing and organizing
3rd Step: Work

You have prepared and organized
you are ready to start working!

”If only I could get more motivated, I
would do so much better with my
schoolwork”
–
3rd Step: Work

Motivate your self:





Find the energy
Decide to focus your energy on the work
Focus your attension on the work
Start with an overview
Go to details and solve the tasks
3rd Step: Work

Helping your own motivation:



Think positively
Accept that you cannot control everything
Take responsibility for your failures – and
successes
(don´t blame the teacher, the textbook,
the job etc.)
3rd Step: Work

Run test ”Try it! 4”

Working in groups:
Consider reasons for failures and
success (use attached word file
– ”Try it 5”)

4th Step: Evaluate
”Great, I am done with the work.
Now I can move on!”


Did Shakespeare quickly write the first draft
of Hamlet and without another glance, send
it to the Globe Theater for production?
Do professional sportsmen just put in a
minimum of practice to get ready for a big
game?
4th Step: Evaluate



Take a moment to congratulate
yourself and feel satisfaction, then:
Compare your results with your goals
Have an out-of-body experience:



Read your paper with your teachers ”glasses”
Or as if you were the teacher!
Based on your evaluation – revise your
work
5th Step: Rethink


Evaluating means considering how
well your result matches your initial
goals
Rethinking means re-considering not
just the outcome of your efforts, but the
ideas and the process underlying your
efforts to solve the tasks.
Completing the process



”Like a painter looking at his or her
finished work, you may find a spot
here or there – but don´t spoil the
canvas!”
Know that there is always another day
Realize that deciding when to stop
work is often as hard as getting
started!
