What is NICU?
Volunteer program for pre-vet students to work
in the foal ICU at the ISU Veterinary College
Help the Vet Med student in the ICU with you
in certain treatments for the foals
There will always be a Vet Med student with
you in the NICU
You will have a partner to volunteer with
What will I do?
Help Vet Med students with certain tasks
including:
Milking mares
Feeding foals
Giving medications
Monitoring vitals
You will not be asked to do anything you are
not comfortable with
No large animal experience required!
When is NICU?
Spring semester during foaling
There may not always be foals!
Shifts for NICU:
Monday-Friday
Saturday and Sunday
3am-7am
5pm-10pm
10pm-3am
7:30am-1pm
1pm-5pm
Depending on volunteers, you may be
scheduled every 3-4 weeks
When do I go in?
ONLY if you are called by a NICU Co-chair
We will NOT call you after 9pm
You are on-call for the day until 9pm
On the weekends:
Saturday volunteers will be called on Friday
nights
Sunday volunteers will be called on Saturday
morning or afternoon
What if I can’t make my shift?
The NICU Co-chairs do not find replacements,
this is all on you!
Switch shifts with another person so you don’t
lose a shift
Find an alternate to cover your shift
Look at the volunteer list for a specific person
to switch shifts
Once you found someone to cover your shift,
email BOTH NICU Co-chairs so we can make
sure to call the right person
When we call you in:
Contact your scheduled partner to arrange
transportation
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
BE ON TIME!!
For shifts from 7am-10pm, go to the Equine
front desk
For shifts from 10pm-7am, call 515-294-6207 or
go to the small animal door and ring the ICU
bell, a student will let you in
Directions to Vet Med
Go south on University Blvd. (towards Hwy
30)
Take a left onto 16th street
Then a right into the second driveway to the
Veterinary College
Go through the large white gate (looks like it’s
just a fence)
Park in the lot by the entrance to the Large
Animal Hospital in the client parking
Reminders
When you are called in, you MUST go!
Do NOT go to your shift if you are sick
If you fail to show up for you shift, you will be
removed from the volunteer list
If you cannot make your shift, you MUST
contact a replacement, BOTH NICU Co-chairs,
and your partner to tell them you switched

CyRide doesn’t run at 3am, so tell us if you
need a ride
Ask vet students questions
Be respectful
Don’t do anything you aren’t comfortable with
How do I sign up?
There will be a Google Doc sent out just after
the spring semester starts
ONLY sign up if you are committed to being a
part of this program!
Also, tell us when you sign up if you already
have any known conflicts so we can plan for
that
