These verbs are the same in structure as gustar, encantar, fascinar, molestar. Me gusta patinar literally means “skating pleases me”. Skating is the subject, me is an object. A Mark le fascinan los libros de historia. = History books fascinate Mark.

Estar triste = to be sad
Estoy triste que… I am sad that… Estoy triste que estemos en la escuela.
It is a fact that we are in school. But because I am expressing an emotion (my emotion) about this, it requires the subjunctive.

These two “E” phrases do not follow the gustar conjugation. We conjugate them according to the person feeling this way. Siento que estés enfermo. I am sorry that you are sick.
Sientes que yo esté enferma. You are sorry that I am sick.
