About the association
•
Mahamaya Girl's College Alumnae Association of North America
(MGCAANA) is a voluntarily led, non-profit organization incorporated in
the State of Washington in March, 2005. The association received the
non-profit organization status in October 2006.
Our mission
•
Our mission is to build, foster, and promote the unique and total growth
of each individual alumna and student of Mahamaya Girls’ College by
providing a network of social, professional, educational, and cultural
opportunities.
Our vision
•
Our vision is to create a future where inspired, well-rounded, and
successful alumnae, living in North America, and students of
Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, Sri Lanka work together to benefit
society.

On going activities

MGCAANA News Letter “Maya Puwath”
Published bimonthly to promote networking among members, share
news about the school, alumnae living in North America and other parts
of the world and the Colombo Branch of the OGA; promote goodwill
among Mahamayans, share recipes, medical views etc…and publish
current events of MGCAANA.
•
Host and Travel Club
Provide safe accommodation to students (undergraduate, graduate,
and postdoctoral) during short school breaks and longer vacations and
also to facilitate acclimation of Mahamaya alumnae on arrival to the
United States and Canada.

Projects for the year of 2006/2007
•
MGCAANA scholarship program for undergraduate and
graduate students
Two $250 scholarships were awarded to undergraduates Menaka
Gayathri Samarasinghe and Pubudini Kumari Mapa who were the
recipients of the Fall 2006 scholarship program. The Goal was to
recognize alumnae who demonstrate outstanding academic
achievements, leadership abilities, and participation in extracurricular
activities, and require a significant level of financial need.
• Monetary support for purchasing sports equipment
MGCAANA donated $200 to purchase sports equipment at Mahamaya.

• Sponsor disadvantaged students at Mahamaya
With the help of current members and well-wishers of MGCAANA, 21
disadvantaged students were sponsored; The money was used to pay
the hostel fees of the students for one year.
• Donation to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)
As an effort to help a charity organization, MGCAANA donated $100 to
NAMI which is a non-profit charity organization for people with mental
illness and their families.

• 75th Anniversary Celebrations - Almsgiving
To honor and pass merit to the founding members, principals, teachers,
students, alumnae, many others who were associated with the school
and no longer with us, and bless the principals, teachers, current
students, the alumnae, and parents, MGCAANA has organized an
almsgiving ceremony for tomorrow.
• 75th Anniversary Celebrations - Commemorative Volume
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mahamaya, MGCAANA is in the
process of publishing a commemorative volume. The Articles were
submitted by current members of MGCAANA, past principles and the
teachers of Mahamaya and alumnae living in Sri Lanka and other
countries.

Future Projects
•
Establishing an endowment in Sri Lanka for the
sponsorship program
MGCANAA is in the process of establishing an endowment in Sri
Lanka to continue the sponsorship process program.
•
Donate French books to the library of Mahamaya
MGCAANA has allocated $250 for this project. The French books will
be mainly used by Ordinary Level and Advanced Level students.

Fundraising
•
The fund raising committee was able to raise $400 during a car wash.
Membership Drive
•
The Board of Directors personally contacted all the members and
invited them to attend the AGM and the Almsgiving.
•
Contacted the membership regarding renewing the membership for the
year of 2007/2008.
To date there are 72 active members!!!!!!!

• Helping Piumee Ratnayake
Piumee Ratnayake is a current student at Mahamaya who is suffering
from Leukemia and currently undergoing surgery in India.
MGCAANA has donated $100 to Piumee and sent the message to the
membership through Maya Puwath and via email so that they could
make a personal contribution if they wish to do so.
