Task: Management and Monitoring of the
TETRA Interoperability Process
Top Priorities for 2006/2007:
– Implementat New Certificate Formats
– Encourage other (non-European) manufacturers
to join the Interoperability Process
Slide 4
What is Interoperability (IOP)
IOP ensures, that TETRA equipment from one
manufacturer is working with TETRA equipment
from another manufacturer, and vice versa.
IOP Testing gives the confidentiality,
that purchased equipment is
interoperable.
IOP ensures, that TETRA is
an Open Standard.
IOP enables Multi-Vendor
market for TETRA
Slide 5
Benefits of open multi-vendor market
User benefits
–
–
–
–
–
wide choice of compatible certified terminals
specialised products for special needs
continuous and fast product innovation
continuous and genuine competition, hence lower prices
less dependency - lower risk of market disturbances
Industry benefits
– wider market, bigger volumes
– more possibility to invest – faster product creation
– longer lifetime of market
TETRA MoU Association runs the IOP certification
process to guarantee open multi-vendor market!

Independent TETRA Certification Body
ISCOM is the official type approval
body of Italy
Testing is performed at the infrastructure manufacturers premises
supervised by ISCOM
Test execution is traced and the
test logs are used by ISCOM to
check the compliance to IOP specs.
After careful analysis of the logs the
certificates are issued and published
on the TETRA MoU web-site

Status of IOP Testing and Certification (1)
12 Manufacturers participate in IOP Testing:
– 8 companies have received TETRA
infrastructure certificates for 9 systems
– 9 companies have received TETRA
terminal certificates in trunked mode
– 6 companies have received TETRA
terminal DMO certificates
– 2 companies have received TETRA
terminal DMO gateway certificates
Slide 16
Status of IOP Testing and Certification (2)
In total 176 IOP Certificates issued
Testing and Certification for Inter-System
Interface (ISI) and Peripheral Equipment
Interface (PEI) has not started yet

Slide 17
Interoperability in Practice
Almost all TETRA networks use a mix of terminals
from different vendors
High innovation speed:
– more than 30 new terminal models have been
launched during the last 3 years.
– terminals with GPS receivers and colour displays
An increasing number of application developers rely
on the TIP specifications and the IOP process
Many Users and Operators ask for IOP Certificates
when purchasing new equipment
Slide 18
The Way Forward
Continuing success of TETRA in Asia
Increasing number of manufacturers
in Asia
from a European-Centric to a Global Activity
TETRA MoU would like to invite Asian
companies to join the IOP testing process.
The first Technical Forum Meeting outside of
Europe will be held in Asia in February 2007
