Science in Culture Katherine Warren Strategy & Development Manager History, Thought and Systems of Belief 9 & 15 February 2012 Science in Culture • Understanding and developing the reciprocal relationship between the sciences and the arts & humanities • Historical evolution of science; creativity, discovery & argumentation in science; science as a system of knowledge • Impact on values, beliefs & ‘world views’; cultural, religious, ethical and legal dimensions; representation of science in language, literature, art, imagery, museums etc; • Anticipating & influencing future controversies and enhancing public debates & engagement • Emerging areas such as medical humanities Activity to date • Highlight notices in the Fellowships and Networking schemes • Workshops with the NIH, NEH and Wellcome Trust on Culture, Health and Wellbeing & proposed joint funding call • Connected Communities programme ‘Communities, Culture, Health and Wellbeing’ call • Workshop with the Royal Society on ‘Neuroscience, responsibility and the law’ • Public policy fellowship with the Nuffield Council on ‘Solidarity as a core value in bioethics’ – Dr Barbara Prainsack • Essex Autonomy Project – ‘Deprivation of Liberty’ seminar Activity to date • Exploratory Awards call – Funding of up to £30k over 6 months to hold workshops or similar events and/or to carry out a scoping study or research review – 45 proposals received and 15 awards made – Range of ‘sciences’ involved e.g. biology, mathematics, medical and health sciences, environmental and climate science, brain/neuroscience, chemistry, clinical practice, psychiatry – Partners involved e.g. British Library, British Council, Science Museum, British Museum, Natural History Museum, Lloyd’s of London, Nottingham Council Future plans • Science in Culture event – late May 2012 – 1.5 day event attended by award holders (from Exploratory Awards, highlight notices and responsive mode) and advisory group members – Aim to identify common areas and key themes/topics which can be refined for large grants call • Appointment of Leadership Fellow • Develop Large Grants call – Summer 2012 • Issue Large Grants call – Autumn 2012 • Call closing date – January 2013 – Two stage assessment process: outline proposals followed by a small number of invited full proposals • Awards to start – October 2013 Points for discussion • How do we encourage new and innovative proposals? • How do we encourage applications from all subject areas within AHRC’s remit? • How do we encourage partnerships both across disciplines and outside academia?
