Digital Transformations
• Exploit the potential of digital technologies to transform research
in the arts and humanities
• Ensure that arts and humanities research is at the forefront of
tackling crucial issues
• Develop new ways of working to enhance access and creativity
• Topics include: Text: Authority and Power; The Creative &
Performing Arts and Technology; and Translating Knowledge
Key points / issues
• The key element of Digital Transformations is the transformation
rather than the digital. The focus is less on the digital and more on
the transformation brought about by incorporating and using the
digital in arts and humanities research
• It may be that some researchers would benefit from the opportunity
to use and engage with different kinds of technology to give them
new ideas about how they can use the digital to transform their
research
• Need to engage other disciplines and other sectors
Activity to date
• Highlight notices in the Fellowships and Networking schemes
– 7 funded through Highlight Notices
• Research Development Awards call
– Funding of up to £30k over 6 months for research networks and
workshops, including scoping studies and small research projects
– 59 proposals received and 18 awards made
– Range of disciplines and uses of technology
• Links with RCUK Digital Economy programme and related activities
– The Collaborations Workshop, 21-22 March 2012 at Queen’s College,
Oxford
– Centre for Copyright and New Business Models
– Digging into Data Challenge
Future plans
• Digital Transformations workshop – late Spring 2012
– 1.5 day event attended by award holders (from Research
Development Awards, highlight notices and responsive mode) and
advisory group members
– Aim to identify common areas and key themes/topics which can be
refined for large grants call
• Develop Large Grants call – Summer 2012
• Digital Transformations Launch Event – Autumn 2012
• Issue Large Grants call – Autumn 2012
• Call closing date – January 2013
– Two stage assessment process: outline proposals followed by a
small number of invited full proposals
• Awards to start – October 2013
