United Way of Palm Beach County
•
•
History: United Way has been supporting
local human service programs that achieve
measurable results for more than 80 years.
Mission: The mission of United Way of Palm
Beach County is to improve measurably the
lives of individuals and families in Palm
Beach County by uniting the resources of
donors, volunteers, agencies and the
community.
United Way of Palm Beach County
•
•
•
•
United Way raises money to support human
services programs through individuals,
workplace campaigns, grants and leadership
gifts.
In the past ten years alone, more than $100
million has been raised and distributed locally
and regionally.
United Way strives to achieve meaningful impact
through its investments in programs.
United Way is also a partner, convener and leader
of local and regional collaboratives.
Community Care Fund
•
•
•
The Community Care Fund – unrestricted
donations, used to invest in strategies that
provide solutions to some of Palm Beach
County’s most critical needs.
Used to support human-services programs
that are run by local nonprofits and that
directly benefit Palm Beach County’s most
needy residents.
Used to fund programs that provide
measurable, meaningful, lasting results.
Funding Focus Areas
•
•
•
In 2009, United Way of Palm Beach County
engaged in a strategic planning process that
will guide our work through 2014.
United Way is committed to supporting
efforts within the three Targeted Care Areas
(TCA) of education, income and health.
Based on the input of our community (subject
matter experts, funded agencies, and
donors), we identified funding strategies
within each of the TCAs.
Education
•
Educational attainment is a significant
predictor of whether children and youth will
achieve their potential to attain economic
self-sufficiency.
Education
Focus on quality, best-practice programs
that serve low-income youth and young
adults in the out-of-school setting and
provide:
• Literacy education and academic support
services primarily for middle and high
school-aged youth and/or
• Services for youth transitioning from high
school to work and/or college (up to age
24).
Education
Targeted Outcomes:
•
•
Increase the number of students who
graduate from high school on time
Increase the number of 18-24 year-olds who
successfully make the transition from high
school to work and/or college.
Income
•
•
Given the current economic climate, many
local families struggle to meet their most
basic needs.
Many also struggle with maintaining their
financial stability over the long term.
Income
Focus on quality, best-practice programs that serve
low-income individuals and families and provide:
• Basic needs services (e.g., food, shelter, and
emergency needs) for those in crisis and services
designed to assist with accessing basic needs
services and benefits programs (through screening
and enrollment support) such as Medicaid,
Medicare, and food stamps) and/or
• Comprehensive financial stability services,
particularly for those with incomes at or below 80%
of Palm Beach County’s Median Family Income (80%
of MFI equates to $54,080).
Income
Targeted Outcomes:
• Increase the ability of low-income residents
and families to meet their basic needs.
• Improve the ability of low-income residents
and families to increase their financial
stability, income, savings, and assets.
Health
•
With increasing unemployment in Palm
Beach County, the number of low-income,
uninsured residents has increased
dramatically, making it difficult for them to
access quality health care that is
comprehensive and readily available.
Health
Focus on quality, best-practice programs that serve
low-income, uninsured residents and provide:
• Health insurance enrollment services (i.e., benefits
screening and enrollment support) and assistance
with identifying and gaining entrance to
comprehensive health care services and/or
• Comprehensive health care services (e.g., primary
health care, oral health, mental health, and health
education services) offered through structures such
as community health centers, physician-led systems
of care, and free clinics.
Health
Targeted Outcomes
•Increase the ability of low-income,
uninsured residents to access health
insurance and quality, comprehensive
health care services.
•Increase the availability and use of quality,
comprehensive health care services by lowincome residents.
