care associated infections – even the
smallest of actions can make a
significant difference

• Standard Precautions.
• Taking sensible steps to protect yourself and
others against diseases that patients may
have.
• Protecting the patient from us!
• Based on the procedure being undertaken,
not what is known or suspected about an
individual.
Bare below elbows policy
• Directive from the Department of Health
• Staff having an interface with patients
• WILL;
– Decontaminate their hands before contact and
immediately after contact
– Be bare below their elbows
– Only wear a single plain banded ring
– ‘Tuck’ in ties to avoid contact with patient
• WILL NOT
– Wear stoned rings or wrist watch during patient
interface
– Wear lanyards (only clip on ID badges for clinical staff)
– Wear false nails, nail tips or nail varnish
