The problem of food waste
Food security - what is it?
SecondBite - A Fresh Approach
Grassroots to growth
Australians throw out $5.2 billion worth
of food every year
Up to 50% of food is wasted from paddock to plate
• $1.1 billion dollars of fruit and
vegetables are wasted in
Australia every year
• More than ¼ of the water we use
worldwide is taken to grow over
one billion tonnes of food that
nobody eats!
53,000 tonnes of bananas are
wasted every year in Australia
1.2 million
Australians do not
have access to
affordable, safe,
nutritious food
What is causing Food Insecurity?
Food access and equity
• FI 20-40% more likely to be overweight or obese
• 12.6 million Australians are overweight or obese
(Burns, 2005)
(AIHW, 2010)
• Low income Victorians less likely to consume 2 fruit and
5 veg.
• 104,000 homeless community members
• 2.5 times exposure to fast food in low-SES
• EFR use Australia wide: 2 million?
(AIHW, 2010)
(Counting the Homeless, 2006)
(Burns, 2005)
(Food Bank Australia, 2012)
