The scope of work includes the following:
–
Replacing 11 existing buildings that range from 45 to 30 years in
age.
– Retaining 4 buildings, 3 of which are less than 10 years in age and
the +30 year old Natatorium that total 120,133 square feet.
– Constructing additional square feet to raise the capacity of Klein
High School up to serve 3,500 students. The new total size of KHS
will be approximately 636,350 square feet.
– Constructing new parking areas, drives, site utilities, and storm
detention.

Many of the existing KHS instructional spaces such as classrooms, science
labs, computer labs, and library do not and have not met the Texas Education
Agency space, minimum square foot, and design requirements for many years.
The facilities were built to code at the time of construction. The cost to correct
these types of items is not included in the amounts quoted below because
according to the study they are “not feasible to correct”. Several of the existing
buildings were not originally designed with HVAC systems.
Accessibility to spaces and restroom facilities do not meet current Texas
Department of Licenses and Regulations (TDLR) & the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The facility assessment study identified
$9,200,000 worth of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing replacement costs
and $8,900,000 worth of renovation costs needs over the next four years.
Safety and security are continually increasing issues with a campus with 15
separate buildings. The new facility would be primarily under one roof.
