from around the world. Blues with a long history
comes from African songs. It has been used to show
who they are and what is in their heart. Hip-hop and
the rap are also enjoyed. Hip-hop which can be fast or
slow will help people hear new things in old music,
while rapperswill speak along with the beat.
Another important style is the Latin music, which
has spread .all over the world. It is especially
popular with Spanish-speakingpeople. There are many

American Country Music
American country music, also known as countrywestern or hillbilly music is rooted in the folk songs
of immigrants from Great Britain. It has
connections to other ethnic music found in America
as well. Country music uses simple melodies and
lyrics that express everyday emotions such as
loneliness, love, and grief. It began with small
groups of country musicians singing and playing
songs of love, hard times, and social problems.
American Country Music(2)
The instruments used to play or accompany the tunes
were the fiddle, the banjo, and the guitar.
Although country music now attracts a widespread
audience, its home is considered to be in Nashville,
Tennessee, which is the location of the Country
Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Blues and Jazz
The blues most likely began as solo singing.
These solo songs may have come from “field
hollers” that slaves yelled while they toiled in
the fields. They also may have come from
story songs, called ballads, and other songs
that were sung at lively dances. Blues
singers made slight changes to original
melodies and rhythm in order to add
emotional expression, including sounds of
moaning or crying. The emotions expressed
were often sad and mournful.
Blues and Jazz (2)
Later on, instruments such as the guitar, banjo,
and harmonica were added to accompany
solo blues singing. Eventually the piano,
bass,
drum,
brass
and
woodwind
instruments were also added. Today,
musicians follow a specific form or pattern of
phrases when they sing or play the blues.
One of America’s most famous blues singers
was Bessie Smith (1894-1937).
Blues and Jazz (3)
Jazz probably began in New Orleans,
Louisiana, in the early twentieth
century. Is started as a mixture of many
different types of music including
popular music and the blues, is has
changed over the years and has many
different sub-styles, such as Dixieland,
swing, bebop, Afro-Cuban, cool, free
jazz, and fusion.
