A Joint Working Group decided at the state
level, that EMS was in need of ESCAPE
HOODS in case of a CBRNE event, where
EMS needed respiratory protect to self-evacuate
to a safe location
Standard equipment on ALL ambulances across
the state
Hunterdon EMS Distribution

Hunterdon County EMS received funding to purchase
ER1000 Escape Respirators and holding bags for:



Each BLS Unit – 4 per unit
Each ALS Unit – 2 per unit
Each Support Vehicle – 1 per unit

(Chief, Command, Rescue, Support, etc, not including bikes, boats,
trailers)


Description


The North ER1000 Escape
Respirator is an ESCAPE ONLY,
Air-Purifying respirator consisting
of a hood with neck seal, a
halfmask facepiece and two airpurifying cartridges.
When the wearer inhales, air is
drawn through the air-purifying
cartridges and expelled through the
exhalation valve when the wearer
exhales
WARNINGS

This respirator is designed to
provide LIMITED
PROTECTION for a SINGLE
ESCAPE from:
GASES
 VAPORS
 PARTICULARS



DO NOT REUSE
It is NOT designed for escape
from FIRE or RADIATION

Do NOT use to enter
into a contaminated or
unknown atmosphere for
ANY purpose
Do NOT use for
protection while working
in a LDH atmosphere
Do NOT remove while
in a contaminated or
unknown atmosphere


This respirator will NOT
provide protection from
high heat, flames or
carbon monoxide
Do NOT use for fire
fighting or escape from
fire
Donning the Respirator


The neck seal of the
respirator seals around
the users neck
Remove any neckware,
such as ties or jewelry
and tie back any hair that
may interfere with the
neck seal

Remove the respirator
from its SEALED
container

With the FACEPIECE
away from you, place
your hands through the
neck seal and stretch the
seal

Slip the respirator over
your head until the neck
seal is around your neck
Assure the head harness
is centered on the crown
of your head
Smooth any rolls in the
neck seal to assure a
good seal

Position the half mask
facepiece over your nose,
mouth and chin and
tighten the halfmask by
simultaneously pulling on
the straps on each side
of the respirator until
you get a seal between
your face and the
halfmask facepiece

GET OUT of the area
quickly but safely
If contaminated, call for
support and HazMat for
decontamination of
yourself and your unit
Leave respirator on until
in a safe area
Doffing the Respirator


In a NONCONTAMINATED
area, loosen the straps by
pulling forward on the
latches
Grab the neck seal with
both hands, and pull the
hood over your head
Maintenance





The respirators are to be
stored ON YOUR UNITS
for emergency use
Should be in an easily
accessible cabinet
The respirator is designed for
a SINGLE USE
Should be disposed of after
use
Check during your daily,
weekly or monthly rig checks
to make sure still in sealed
package and present
STORAGE


The Escape Respirator is
packaged in a SEALED
FOIL PACKAGE to
protect from light and
moisture
Store the respirator in a
CLEAN, DRY area in its
original sealed foil
package
EXPIRATION DATE


Expiration date is FIVE
YEARS from date of
manufacture
The expiration date is on
the box and the foil
package
AGENCY RESPONSIBLITY

Place respirators into response units







4 Each BLS Unit
1 Each Support Vehicle
2 Each ALS Unit
Replace units once used
Ensure members are trained in usage of the ESCAPE
RESPIRATOR, though this online module, and inservice drills
Remind members of location and proper usage
Have available for use at special events, standby’s, etc
