
Is the prevention of atmospheric
contamination
Accepted engineering control measures are to
be used to accomplish this
◦ (for example, enclosure or confinement of the
operation, general and local ventilation, and
substitution of less toxic materials).



When effective engineering controls are not
feasible or sufficient,
Or while they are being instituted, OSHA
requires that employees use appropriate
respirators.
When your employees need respirators to do
their jobs, setting up an effective respirator
safety program is essential.

◦ Procedures to evaluate program

Respiratory protection is required by several
standards
◦ Subpart Z – Toxic and Hazardous Substances
 1910.1000 when exposures are above the Permissible
Exposure Limit (PEL).
 This training topic can be used as part of the training
session for these standards' respiratory protection
requirements.
 1910.134 Appendix D
 Provisions for respirator use that is not required under
standard. Employers have responsibilities when respirator
use is voluntary.

Must be comprehensive, understandable
◦ Why respirators are necessary;
◦ The type(s) of respirator they will be using;
◦ The respirator’s capabilities and limitations;
◦ The role that proper fit, usage, and maintenance can
play;
◦ How to inspect, don, doff, and check the seals of the
respirator;
◦ How to clean and store the respirator;
◦ How to report damaged equipment, or how to have
it repaired;
◦ Responding to emergencies that involve respirator
use;
◦ Medical signs and symptoms that may limit or
prevent the effective
use of respirators; and
◦ A review of the regulation’s training requirements.

Is required annually, whenever changes in
the workplace or type of respirator would
make previous training obsolete, when
there are indications that the employee’s
knowledge is inadequate, and under any
other circumstances where retraining would
be necessary to ensure safe respirator use.



Respirators make your lungs and heart work
harder. The employee is required to complete
a medical evaluation prior to respirator use.
Completion of the OSHA required medical
questionnaire and the Doctor’s review will
determine whether the employee is eligible
for respirator use.
Confidential between doctor and employee



Employer shall provide the doctor with a copy
of the written respiratory protection program
A copy of the regulations that pertain to
medical evaluation
Employer shall receive a written
recommendation
◦ Limitations
◦ Need for a follow-up
◦ A statement that the PLHCP has provided the
employee with a copy of the written
recommendation
If the job requires a respirator with a tight-fitting face
piece, the employer shall ensure the employee pass
a fit test.





Initial use
A change of respirator type / brand / model.
Annually
When employee reports any changes in physical
condition
The employee will conduct a user seal check prior to
each use
◦ Positive Pressure Check
◦ Negative Pressure Check

Employee pick from various models, sizes
Show employee how to put on, position, set
straps, and how to determine acceptable fit.
A mirror shall be available
Explain employee he/she is being asked to
select the respirator the provides the most
acceptable fit.
Instruct employee to hold each chosen
facepiece up to the face and eliminate that
does not give acceptable fit.
The mask is donned and worn for 5 minutes






Test shall not be conducted if there is any
hair growth between the skin and the
facepiece sealing surface
Any type of apparel that interferes with fit
shall be altered or removed
If employee exhibits difficulty breathing
during the test he/she shall be referred to a
physican
If the fit is unacceptable, select another type
