simply insufficient numbers to make this fiscally viable
– Consulting with them to develop their own MPH
– Working with International Affairs on lessons learned
Dr. Kiran Patel interested in building a medical
school in Gujarat – visit being planned – public
health not included
Collaborations: International
At Dr. Klasko’s request, some of us have been
working with our colleagues in Medicine and
Nursing on a possible collaborations in
Shanghai
Like the Patel project in India, the interest seems
to be largely around a collaboration across
medical schools, though there are clearly public
health needs and possibilities for us, should we
choose to pursue them
Collaborations: International
A group of us will be traveling to Malaysia
in October to explore opportunities for
collaboration with the University of
Malaysia Sarawak, though a State
Department grant to the College of
Education
Collaborations
In my external role, I visit, meet, discuss
opportunities and then bring them back here
I discuss these with chairs and center directors
and faculty that I am aware have interests
The goal is to seek partnerships that further our
mission and our agenda consistent with the
University’s desire to become a top 50 research
institute, to increase the number of graduate
students and graduates, to more deliberately
engage with the community, and to
internationalize
Faculty Governance
I am encouraged by the amount of time and
energy that faculty contribute to governance
through standing and ad hoc committees,
task forces, representing us on HSC and
University bodies, etc
I am concerned about two things:
– The amount of time faculty spend on these
– The apparent disconnect in communication
between committees and the faculty as a whole
Faculty Governance
I asked each of you to document the
committees on which you serve in your
annual Faculty Activity Reports – I intend
to go through these and see if there might
not be places to increase efficiency
We discussed at an earlier meeting,
announcing meetings, posting agendas,
posting minutes . . . to allow people to
actively engage in Faculty Governance
Faculty Governance
How can we do a better job informing
people of the issues being raised and
discussed, assure true representation from
departments and the faculty at large,
assure participation from interested
parties, assure discussion of
recommendations, such that everyone, to
the extent folks are interested, knows and
has been involved in what is going on?
As always, THANK YOU for what you do
for our students, for the College, for the
University and for the Community
I have the luxury of getting out, hearing
about the good work you do, and singing
your praises – it’s very gratifying work.
Thank you!
