What’s in a name?
 UWE is developing a reputation for Patient and Public
Involvement
 There are many names for the people we want to work
with when teaching Health and Social Care students
 Many people do not like the term ‘service user’
 We need a term that is acceptable internally and
recognised externally
 We are proposing to use PPI BUT to explain who this
includes e.g. Service users, cares, expert by experience etc.
The new strategy must be
sustainable
 To know why we have involvement of the public
 To be clear what student need from public
involvement in their education
 To be clear how much this involvement costs and
ensure appropriate funding is available whilst being
realistic about current financial constraints
 Time for staff to develop involvement in their
professional programmes
