Assonance
• Repeating a vowel sound throughout a
sentence, phrase, paragraph, or entire piece of
writing (A, E, I, O, or, U, sometimes Y)
Example:
The cats ran after an alligator
who was trying to assist an alarmed and
drowning armadillo to get across the river.
Alliteration
• Repeating the same consonant letter/ sound at
the beginning, middle, or end of a word within a
sentence, phrase, paragraph, or even an entire
piece of writing
• Consonants are letters that are
NOT vowels (NOT “A, E, I, O, U”)
Example:
1. Peter Piper picked a pack of pickled peppers.
2. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a
woodchuck could chuck wood?
Personification
• Giving human qualities, feelings,
or actions to non-living things
(inanimate objects)
Examples:
1. The window winked at me.
2. The rain kissed my cheeks
as it fell from the sky.
Metaphor
• A comparison between two unlike
things not using “like” or “as”
“You are a
bird trapped in
a cage.”
Simile
• A comparison between two unlike
things using “like” or “as”
“Life is like a box of chocolates.
You never know what you’re
gonna get.”
