Franklin Roosevelt (FDR)
• Elected president
in 1932
• Felt that the way
to end the
Depression was
to increase the
size of the
government
The New Deal
• FDR’s program to alleviate the
problems of the Great Depression
• During the first 100 days programs were
passed in order to provide Relief,
Recovery, and Reform
The New Deal
• FDR paid for the New Deal through
deficit spending
– Government spent more money than
it was taking in
Social Security Act
• Provided aid to retirees, the
unemployed, people with
disabilities, and families with
dependent children
Wagner Act
• Monitored unfair management
practices like firing workers who
join unions
• Allowed unions to organize and
collective bargain with
management
Fair Labor Standards Act
• Raised the minimum wage
• Set maximum work hours
• Ended child labor at age 16
Public Works Administration
(PWA)
• Set up to provide jobs to build
roads, schools, and other public
works
Civilian Conservation Corps
(CCC)
• Established to put young men to
work on public projects
Works Progress
Administration (WPA)
• Provided jobs to
unskilled
workers
constructing
government
buildings
Federal Deposit Insurance
Corporation (FDIC)
• This acted as
insurance to
protect individual
bank accounts in
the event of bank
failure
• Insures savings
accounts up to
$250,000
Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC)
• Monitors the stock market and
enforces laws regulating the sale of
stocks and bonds
National Industry Recovery
Act (NIRA)
• Established codes of fair practices
for industries and to promote
industrial growth
Agricultural Adjustment Act
• Raised crop
prices
• Paid farmers
NOT to grow
crops in order
to stop
overproduction
Tennessee Valley Authority
(TVA)
• Constructed
dams and
power plants to
provide cheap
electricity to
rural and poor
parts of the
South
New Deal Criticisms
• Critics felt the New Deal put too
much power in the hands of the
government
Huey Long
• Louisiana
governor
• Criticized the
New Deal
• Said that it did
not go far
enough
Second New Deal
• FDR forced to pass a Second New
Deal because the Supreme Court
ruled that much of the First New
Deal was unconstitutional
Court Packing Scheme
• FDR wanted to increase the
number of Supreme Court justices
• This would allow FDR to have more
justices that agreed with his
policies
• It did not work
