Social Security Act (1935)established a pension system for
retirees and provided
unemployment insurance. (Note:
Did not apply to African Americans.

Wagner Act- recognized the right
of employees to join labor unions
and gave workers collective

Congress of Industrial Organizations
(CIO)- Union that appealed to
more groups of people than the
AFL.
United Automobile Workers Union
(UAW)- staged the sit-down strike in
Detroit. (1936).

Supreme Court. (In order to get
more to agree on New Deal).
Black Cabinet- African American
leaders that helped advise FDR.
Mary McLeod Bethune- member of
Black Cabinent. Fought for racial
equality.
Indian New Deal- gave Native
American economic assistance
and greater control over their own

group that supported FDR.
(southern whites, northern blue
collar workers, poor midwestern
farmers, African Americans).
Welfare state- government
assumes responsibility for providing
for the welfare of children, poor,
elderly, sick, disabled, unemployed.

focused on ordinary Americans
struggling.
