Distant cousin of Theodore Roosevelt
Possessed a “can do” attitude-exuded positivity in
contrast to Hoover
Selected a “Brain Trust” of experts to help solve
the economic crisis
Would establish the “New Deal” relief for the
needy, economic recovery, and financial reform
The House of Representatives and Senate would
now claim nearly 2/3’s of represenation
FDR “The Only Thing We Have to
Fear Is Fear Itself”
The Hundred Days

Congress would pass 15 major pieces of
“New Deal” legislation
These laws GREATLY expanded the federal
governments role
“Fireside Chats” radio conversations to the
American people
The Glass-Steagall Act- Created the FDIC
which insured deposits
The Federal Securities Act
Repeal of prohibition to raise $ by taxing
The “New Deal” and it’s opponents…….
The Depression Continues





Regardless, the Economic Depression or
“Great Depression” would continue
throughout the 1930’s
The role of government would be changed
forever
Government spending would increase
Fears of “socialism” would spread
throughout the USA
FDR would be praised in many circles but
disliked in some.

AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Act)
Govt would PAY farmers NOT to grow,
prices would rise
Destroy food while millions are hungry?
TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority!
Renovated dams, built new ones, jobs,
flood control, hydroelectric power Pg 520
NIRA-National Industrial Recovery Act
Young Folks








CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps)
Unmarried young men 18-25
Plant trees, building roads
Located mainly in Great Plains
Reforestation would prevent a 2nd Dust Bowl
NIRA (National Industrial Recovery Act)
PWA (Public Works Admin)-Govt gave $ to states
to hire folks to build schools and OTHER
COMMUNITY buildings
CWA (Civil Works Admin) built 40000 schools,
paid teachers, built roads
Problems?

Some folks NOT keen on New Deal
Projects
Deficit Spending-Spending more than you
bring in
The New Deal WOULD NOT end the
Depression
Liberal critics said it did not go far enough
Conservatives said too much $ being
spent on New Deal Policies, hurting
business, socializing economy
THE SUPREME COURT!!!






The Supreme Court will STRIKE DOWN
legality of NIRA in 1935
The following year AAA was struck down
With Congressional support, FDR proposes
adding 6 NEW Justices!!
He’ll appoint them, congress will approve
them
“Court Packing Bill”
Violation of court’s independence??
