No proxy server
E-learning software installed on most PCs
Some e-learning
Manual transfer of data in ESR learning record
Our objectives from the pilot

Would the NLMS work within the ORH
environment

To eliminate the need for manual transfer of
data into the ESR learning record
Prior to commencing pilot
Appointment of an e-learning lead
 Involvement with HR, ESR administration,
Learning and Development and IT
 Local server
 Checking current e-learning was SCORM
compliant

User Testing
50 users from a variety of clinical and nonclinical departments
 Tested both national and local content
 User guides and evaluation forms given out
 Positive feedback with some issues re
playing content

Problems with testing
Lack of time and commitment from users
 Lack of understanding about the importance
of testing
 Issuing usernames and passwords
 System not working

Feedback
Frustration with system logging them out
 Not being able to move through course
 Marking as incomplete when user feels that
they have finished.
 Not always able to take assessments
 Needed user guides
 Some very positive feedback

“Good interface and easy navigation.
All the links worked plus the design was
uncluttered and user friendly”
Infection Control
“As a learning tool, I feel it is very
beneficial and should be easy to access as
long as the staff using it are relatively
computer literate and that they have
computer access.”
Recommendations for testing
Review how testing is carried out
 Group sessions
 One main contact to push users
 Longer testing time
 Decide what works best for you

Issues to be resolved
Tracking into ESR is not satisfactory at
present
 Some national courses are not working as
expected

Lessons learnt



Full support required from
 User testing
 IT
 HR
 Learning and Development
Allow time and resources to manage and develop
pilot
Have a ‘buddy’ 
Way forward
Recommend that the Trust continues to rollout the NLMS
 Continue with an e-learning lead
 Promote e-learning
 Training with handouts
 Maybe some sort of helpdesk
 Continuation of development of local
content

