Media and Body Image: EATING
DISORDERS
What does the media tell us about our bodies? What are
we supposed to look like? ( Barbie, models, athletes,
celebrities)
Why do some people develop eating disorders?
Can people with eating disorders do permanent damage
to their bodies?
Where can a teen with an eating disorder get help?
*Next week we will learn more about eating disorders.
Perceptions?
Norms?
How do these influence our healthy and unhealthy
behaviors?
Mass Media
Mass media powerfully influences our perceptions of
beauty, our attitude toward others, and our own selfimage.
The media promotes images that can harm our selfesteem and tempt us to do unhealthy or expensive acts
to try and live up to the beauty ideals we see through
media.
Media Messages about Bodies
The media presents messages about “ideal” body types
for both men and women.
Men are expected to be muscular, strong, violent,
masculine, aggressive, tough, and dominant.
Women are expected to be feminine, thin, dainty, and
passive.
Statistics
The average American woman is 5’4 and 140 pounds
The average fashion model is 5’11 and 115 pounds
Models are thinner than 98% of American women
80% of women are dissatisfied with their appearance
25% of men and 45% of women are on a diet
Approx. 7 million girls/women struggle with eating
disorders
Approx. 1 million boys/men struggle with eating
disorders
The Beauty Industries
Our insecurities about our size, shape and appearance of our bodies
has created a multi-billion dollar economy.
Fashion/Cosmetics/Fragrance/Weight Loss/Cosmetic Surgery
Clothing is designed to suit the tall, thin frames.
The cosmetic industry suggests that freckles, pores, fine lines, and
wrinkles are to be covered and hidden. (airbrush)
We spend $20 billion a year on cosmetics to help us try and conform to
society and look like what we see in the media.
Journal Reflection
Why is the American body ideal for women so thin today? And why is
the body ideal for men so large and muscular? Does this tell us
anything about the roles we expect men and women to fulfill?
Can you think of any “plus-size” celebrities today? How are they
portrayed?
Why are boys encouraged to play contact sports such as football and
hockey, while women are encouraged to take up sports such as tennis,
figure-skating, or gymnastics?
Did you play with Barbie, G.I. Joe or other similar toys when you were
growing up? Do you think this had any effect on your ideas about male
and female bodies or male and female roles?
