Department Meeting

Thank you for your patience while I worked on the annual evaluations and
the fall schedule.

Still putting together a number of items for the Dean’s office with respect
to the accreditation visit and my own evaluation.
2.
The due date to have the fall schedule built was typically in January from
2007 through 2011.

Last bit of construction must be completed today (I have a meeting with Erin at 11am).

Lucky: Don’t know why the late due date, but several projects during the
Winter “break” slowed down my work on the schedule (e.g. large budget
/list of corresponding duties was due December 29).

Warning: With the January due date, UNLV always posts the schedule with
a large number of errors, not completing the corrections from our proofs,
and resulting in students/advisors making plans from incorrect information.
With the March 2 due date, I anticipate this will be magnified (huge mess to
clean up).

Anticipated destruction: Right now the color coded schedule looks good.

181 blue, 182 purple, green 283, red 400-level except 431/432, boxed
700-level, black everything else.

Problems with room shortages, etc. will likely mess up our work.
1. Chancellor’s Visit to CDC during Winter Break
a. He made sure to stop to “view” the layout of the campus (e.g. Rec
Center).
b. Showed him the problem with the BEH first floor rooms
c. Discussed: need to serve the students, avoid predators, etc.
d. Knows about the faculty shortage discussed around 2006
e. Meeting went well, went way past the scheduled time, though he had a
later meeting to attend.
A rendering may give us a good starting point when architects are hired, something to go
over to improve, and available in the future for “selling” a MS building.


Next meeting 2:15-5pm on Tuesday

Currently 70,000 square feet (will probably increase)

Stacking exercise (not clear whether 3 or 4 stories yet)

Site analysis (probably up to 5 sites), consistent with UNLV’s current Master Plans: ASC,
north side of CDC, two behind the Lied Library, one behind In-N-Out (Bus depot problem?)

The pictures correspond to one of the sites being studied, are only preliminary, and still need
to get initial pictures corresponding to the other sites.
g)
I have emphasized stamping, the need to be located near the students (a huge selling point
for a MS Building), avoiding predators, the problem with BEH first floor rooms, etc.
h)
Will likely learn some of the complications with the updated codes (e.g. auditoriums).
i)
Architecture’s interests likely include something creative, influential, etc., that they can
publish (possibly the plans will celebrate/bleed/puke mathematics and statistics).
j)
From David Baird: … This is an exciting project for the Math Science Department, School
of Architecture and the University. Richard Gnat has agreed to take this project on as a
service assignment with the help of two other faculty members Miriam Neet - licensed
architect and Kevin Kemner - educational expert. Richard is an accomplished licensed
professional who has worked for SOM and other prominent Architectural firms during his
career. I have attached his resume and samples of his work for your review. ……

Regent Schofield has been working towards community support

Recently: Jim Livengood (Athletic Director), Dave Rice, ASC Dean, Clark County
Superintendent, etc. etc.

Gupta (I think he has had experience raising funds for USC and may be applying for the
UNR President).

Possibly we are number three on UNLV’s priority list behind the 50,000 seat stadium and
(?the 15 million dollar donation for the Business School?).

Bill Boldt, Fred Tredup (Chief of Staff), etc. seem to like the pictures.

I believe next step would include “ten second” advertising of the variety and relevance of
the 12000 plus students.

Our original thoughts were 40-50 million dollars,
Last week heard possibly only $200 per square foot,
Yesterday: the President guesses about $350 per square after the technology, etc.
(informal conversation between Schofield and the President yesterday).
d) March 15!! Architecture Department is to release a picture to
Regent Schofield to present to possible donors.

Department Scholarship Committee Needed

For the Bhatnagar Awards, we typically have one “in place.”

To work with Ashley and Shane to seek out new scholarships, promote
our students, etc.

In recent (and past) years, we have had some excellent students
(David Hannasch, Nathan Rowe, Yost?, etc.) who are probably
stronger than a number of students who have strong financial
support at UNLV.

Possibly all of the other COS Departments have one in place.
30 year (plus) quest for a Mathematical Sciences Building
Maybe explain their duties, etc. since before there was one: Bill Brown.
Michael Golberg will be recognized at Commencement: Distinguished
Nevadan Award.
We can invite Shane and Ashley back, if the 15 minutes is insufficient.

My emails will include following:
 One main item involves faculty mentoring and apparently there will be some
changes in the contracts of new faculty hires.
 Apparently UNLV has done a wide scale search on universities with successful
mentoring programs.
 For your information, please look at the attachments.
 From ADS, it sounded as though the attached Junior Faculty Mentoring
Proposal has been at least presented at the Faculty Senate and that possibly a
number of issues were brought up and/or discussed: confidentiality issues,
possible bad advice from the out-of-department mentor, the possibility of
senior faculty having concerns about entitlement for new hires, etc. etc. (see
frames 3 and 4 of the powerpoint). This sounds quite involved and I anticipate
becoming a major item, so I wanted to send you this information to keep you
informed.
 A unnecessary comment: clearly much different than when many of us were
hired, and for instance, when untenured faculty sometimes served as Chair
(e.g. Biology).
