Gaming Industry Today
• Proprietary Protocols
– Barrier to Market and Cost Prohibitive
• Five+ Bill Validator proprietary protocols
• Eight+ Printer proprietary protocols
• Maintenance and development of protocols costly
• Simple Peripherals
– Cost Prohibitive
• Coin Hoppers and Acceptors
– Game Manufacturers must create their own interface
• Multiple Connectors
– Beau plugs
– Amp plugs
– 4-pin, 8-pin or 16-pin

Gaming Device
Charter
• Create an open, industry-developed protocol
utilizing USB to standardize communication
between peripheral devices and the electronic
gaming device, and to facilitate the
incorporation of the standard by developing
reference designs and test tools.

GDS Goals
• Utilize computer industry standard, Universal Serial Bus (USB), as the base
communication protocol for peripheral devices within a gaming machine.
• Incorporate the GSA developed B-Link Serial Protocol for Bill Valiators into
the standard.
• Develop standardized messages (subsets) for
–
–

–
Printers
Coin Acceptors
Coin Hoppers
Interactive Devices
• Provide reference designs and test tools for ease of implementation and
certification.
• Communicate with the regulatory and testing agencies in order to ensure that
the protocol meets or exceeds jurisdictional requirements.

Gaming Industry
with GDS
• Single Protocol for Multiple Devices
– Removes barrier to market
– Increase speed to market for new and innovative technologies
– Flexibility to choose vendor and peripheral
• Standard “Off the Shelf” Technology
– Cost Effective
• Reduced engineering time and costs for development and deployment
– Open and Extensible
• Allows for “manufacturer specific” innovations to be developed and still
maintain the Standard
