3. Reanalysis Report
Michael Bosilovich, Pierre Gauthier,
Adrian Simmons, Detlef Stammer
and Russel Vose
Joint Reanalysis Data Working Group
• Reanalysis Input Catalog
– Recommend to go forward
– Include quality review
– Support disciplinary input data sets (also
contributes to preparation for coupled reanalyses)
– Link to reanalyses output (obs, forecast error,
analysis error, etc)
• Recommend to concentrate on in-situ
observations maintenence (satellite obs,
radiances and retrievals have stewards)
WCRP Reanalysis Pamphlet
• Generally supported, but needs champion
• Should encompass all disciplinary reanalyses
• An Introductory description on the purpose of
the pamphlet
• First Step, request for information (template)
– Project Name (Contact)
– Specs (time,space domain)
– Unique features or objectives
– Future planning
4th International Reanalysis Conference
• Some agreement on
early April 2012
– not too close to WCRP
Science Conference?
– Will check WCRP
calendars
• Will work with David
Legler? and NCEP on
developing the local
organizing
committee
? – Already invovled in the Open Sci. Conf.
• Program committee
• M. Bosilovich (Chair,
Climate/Weather studies)
• D. Stammer (Ocean/Ice)
• A. Simmons
• R. Vose (in situ Obs)
• K. Trenberth? (Climate
Dynamics/Variability, GEWEX)
• JRA
• NCEP
• ESRL (Compo or Whitaker)
• Data Assimilation (D. Dee,
ECMWF)
• Land Analysis (T. Koike, or others)
• Sat Ob. (J Bates)
• WGNE (C. Jakob? modeling,
parameterization)
• WCRP (G. Asrar)
Atmospheric Reanalysis Proliferation
• Generally, a sign of a strong growing community
• At this time, take advantage of multiple data sets
• Consider outcome of the Technical Workshop on
metrics discussions
• Possible project to mitigate user questions:
Coordinated Assessment of Reanalyses
– When you consider space/time/variable dimensions, the
project is huge
– Manpower issues
– Center participation, Independent lead (and/or PCMDI to
facilitate assessments, analogous to AMIP CMIP exps.)
– Perhaps a community wiki?
