Protein
What are Proteins?
•Proteins are a class of compounds
found in every cell of the body.
•Each protein within the body has a
specific function.
• Some proteins are involved in
structural support, while others
are involved in bodily movement,
or in defense against germs.

Protein
Why Proteins are necessary?
• Proteins are vital for the sustenance of life.
• Most important nutrient and building blocks of our body.
• Form the important component of muscles, ligaments, hair,
nails, teeth, organs, glands and vital body fluids like blood.
• Proteins are necessary for growth
and tissue repair.
• Regulate important metabolic
processes in the body.

Protein
Why Proteins are necessary?
• All enzymes are proteins & are vital for the body's metabolism.
• Muscle contraction, immune protection, and the transmission
of nerve impulses are all dependent on proteins.
• Proteins in skin and bone provide structural support.
• Many hormones like insulin are proteins.
• Protein can also provide a source of
energy.

Amino Acids - Proteins
What are Amino Acids?
• Amino acids are the essential building blocks of proteins.
• All plant & animal proteins are built out of various
combinations of twenty kinds of amino acids.
• Essential amino acids are the ones that although essential
to life cannot be produced automatically by the body and
therefore has to be supplemented from outside source.
• Non - essential amino acids are the
ones that the body produces
corresponding to the needs.

Protein - Spot Signs of Protein Deficiency
Step 1
Keep an eye on your hair and nails. Signs of protein deficiency often
take a long time to become apparent as the body uses protein stored
in the tissues if the diet is inadequate. Splitting and/or falling hair and
brittle nails are among the first symptoms.
Step 2
Pay attention to your energy levels, as extreme fatigue, sleeping too
much and generally feeling heavy and tired are all signs that you may
need to boost your levels of protein
Step 3
Ask yourself if you are taking more measures recently to combat bouts
of constipation. While there are a number of reasons that you may feel
constipated, irregularity is one of the signs of protein deficiency.

Protein - Spot Signs of Protein Deficiency
Step 4
Watch your muscles' growth, or lack thereof. If the body does not have
a sufficient supply of protein, it cannot properly build and maintain
muscle tissue. Additionally, protein is stored in the muscles and will be
used by the body in case of deficiency.
Step 5
Check your heart rate regularly, seeking medical attention if it falls
below 60 beats per minute. While low blood pressure is one of the later
signs of protein deficiency, it is an important one which can affect your
health in a number of ways.
Step 6
Be careful to not allow a protein deficiency to become severe, as the
effects become even more drastic. In extreme cases of protein
deficiency, growth may be halted, particularly in children and can
cause drastic fluid retention, mental disorders and skin rashes.

Protein - Diseases caused by protein deficiency
•Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM)/Protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM)
develops when you don't eat enough protein in your diet to meet your
body's protein needs.
•Low calorie intake often accompanies protein-energy malnutrition.
• Protein-energy malnutrition first causes a breakdown of fat, or
adipose tissues in the body. When fat stores are depleted, organs and
muscles break down so that protein can be used to meet your body's
energy needs.
•Symptoms include visible loss of fat stores, slow heart rate, apathy,
mental changes, thin hair, pale, cold, dry skin and skin breakdown
along with increase susceptibility to infection.

changes (change in color or texture),increased and more
severe infections due to damaged immune system,
irritability, large belly that sticks out (protrudes),lethargy or

Protein - Diseases caused by protein deficiency
Marasmus is a condition due to protein calorie
malnutrition. Malnutrition means inadequate food intake.
There is a food gap between food intake and requirement.
Muscle wasting is present and there is severe loss of fat in
subcutanous tissues.
Symptoms
The main sign is a severe wasting and the child appears
very thin and has no fat. There may be reduction in growth
and weight according to height is extremely low
The affected child (or adult) is very thin (“skin and bones”),
most of the fat and muscle mass having been
expended to provide energy. There is severe wasting of
the shoulders, arms, buttocks and thighs, with no
visible rib outlines.
