Overview of the marine industry
• About 80% of all world trade is carried by ships
• More than 50,000 commercial ships in operation
• Ships lifecycle 25-30 years on average
Trends
• Economy of scale
 Larger ships – higher carrying capacity
 Reduce cost and emission per unit of transportation
• Reliability and availability is key
• Rising fuel costs  Focus on efficiency
• Stricter environmental and safety regulations
Technology
• Condition monitoring and condition-based maintenance
• Re-design of existing applications  higher efficiency

Stabilizers – Fin box covers for improved efficiency
Project motivation:
• The stabilizer fin box causes significant
resistance for a ship
• A fin box cover can reduce this
resistance >80 %
• Indications of savings of 100,000
EUR/annum for a cruise liner
Project aim:
• Device to cover the forward part of the
fin box
• Easy installation for retrofit solutions
• Reliability of the stabilizer must not be
reduced

Oily water separators – TURBULO BlueMon
For the first time, it is possible to
measure relevant emission data
in just one system
couple these data with GPS
coordinates
store them minimum 24 months
provide automatic support to
fulfil emission regulation
