Age of technology resulted in sophistication of treatment options. Developments in:
• Dosage forms/routes of administration:
From infusions, syrups, paste and pills to tablets/capsules, injectables and patches
• Dosage reduction:
From multiple daily doses to single dose – improving patient compliance (allopathic) From raw herbs to extracts (complementary)
• Hands-on therapy to medical devices:
Development of numerous medical devices from massage machines to acupressure pens, UV/Laser, energy, magnetic and other treatment equipment
CRITICAL CONSIDERATIONS • Incorporating other treatments/medication:
As long as it is within the Tibb philosophical principles – especially Physis.
• Emphasis not only on medication – also include, dietotherapy, lifestyle and cupping • Hippocratic principle of “pepsis” – digestion and elimination • Dealing with patients presenting with illness conditions in different Qualitative Frames
MAKING APPROPRIATE CHOICE OF TREATMENT • Consideration of Patient Profile: Personal, work, financial, social and cultural circumstances • Compliance: Choice of treatment must promote patient compliance • Protocol: Protocol to address severity of conditions as well as patients with illness conditions in different Qualitative Frames • Referrals: Refer appropriately, in the interest of the patients.
CONCLUSION • “Different strokes for different folks” • Your approach should be as aggressive as possible, using as many options available – without compromising, or over burdening the patient.
