DIDSBURY INTEGRATED NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM, covering Chorlton, Chorlton Park, East Didsbury, West Didsbury, Whalley Range WINTER 2014 Don’t forget clocks go back 27th October 2013, 01:59 BST At the start of 2014 residents and community members raised their concerns and anxieties over the number of burglaries being committed in the Whalley Range ward. We made this one of our top priorities and set up a number of operations, including Operation Indurate, a burglary crime prevention operation focusing on Whalley Range. Significant headway has been made and we are pleased to report to date a 28% reduction in burglaries. YOURSDFH LOCAL INSPECTORS Insp Kinrade Det Insp Marriott We are working hard to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour to make your area a safer place to live and work. GMP will be running a month-long operation ‘OPERATION ADVENT’ throughout December which will see officers breathalysing drivers around the clock, including the morning after. Motorists caught over the limit will be processed like any other criminal and face at least a year’s driving ban, criminal record and up to £5,000 fine. More than 300 people were arrested during last year’s Christmas operation. You don’t have to be drunk to be a drink driver. Just a couple of drinks presents a risk and can affect your ability to drive. If you are planning on having a drink simply plan ahead, arrange alternative means of transport both that night and the following day. Staying Safe Online Shoppers are reminded to stay safe online as scammers will be trying to target online shoppers in the run up to Christmas. KEEPCriminals SAFE THIS are increasingly relying on the Internet to defraud people or steal their identities and there are lots of scams circulating which use email and social networks, where criminals will ask for your personal information, bank or credit card numbers, or online login details. Remember: Ensure that web pages are secure before entering payment details, the address should start with ‘https’ and remember that paying by credit card offers greater protection. Never open emails that look odd and don’t click on links that you are not sure of. Know who you are dealing with if you are providing any personal data. Note banks will never ask for your account numbers or pin details. Be suspicious if anyone asks you for personal or financial information. Often the scams will try to look like regular accounts. Make sure you don’t provide enough information online or through social networks that will help people to steal your identity. Make sure you are using a secure website for any purchases; in some browsers there will be a padlock symbol to denote a secure site. Ensure you have security software that will block spam or phishing emails. The software and anti-virus needs to be kept up-to-date as scammers are continually trying to find ways round security measures. Use a secure site like PayPal when paying individuals, never transfer money directly to them. The national fraud reporting centre – Action Fraud – is where any online frauds should be reported. Their website has an online reporting form http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report-a-fraud-including-online-crime-questions or you can call 0300 123 2040. The local policing team are working hard supporting the community and protecting all residents from being victims of crime but we do need your help. Project Ark is a dedicated resource who focus on reducing domestic burglary. The officers are highly trained in investigations, crime prevention and supporting victims. Where a person is a victim I promise that the service offered by Project Ark will be of the highest of standards but I would rather have no victims at all. In reducing the number of victims I need everyone to work together, closing and locking of doors and windows may sound quite basic but it really will protect your home. If you see anything suspicious, no matter how small please call 101 and report it. Since Project Ark began in August South Manchester's reported burglaries have reduced by 25%, but we still have a lot of work to do. My team and I will be out on patrol working hard to keep you safe. From all officers on Project Ark may we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
