Assessment Needs

As the strategy highlighs that Community Mental
Health Nursing Program is one of the specialties
that we have a significant shortage in Palestine
particularly in the Northern Area of the Westbank

Separation Barrier, total lack of security,
continued closures, varying degrees of siege and
mobility restrictions have isolated students of
entire communities in the north of the west bank
with minimal access to another universities in the
south area.

Assessment Needs

The psychiatric and mental health education of nurses is inadequate
and their role in providing mental health care is underdeveloped.

The situation analysis revealed no concept of holistic mental health
care, high levels of stigma and no consumer support or advocacy
groups.

Well educated trained nurses can contribute to the promotion of
mental health and the prevention and treatment of mental disorders.

Assessment Needs

WHO recommends that mental health care should be part of or
integrated into primary health care.

Education is necessary
 to improve the recognition of mental disorders in primary health
care,
 to increase the referral to more specialized health providers
 to enhance the initiation of supportive therapies.

Ongoing supervision and support from specialist mental health
services are needed to assist community mental health nurses to care
for people with more complex mental health needs.


Ongoing education of mental health is also needed:

to assist nurses to further develop their knowledge and
skills,

to foster changes in attitudes and beliefs and

to reorient them from custodial models of mental
health care to community
based
care
&
treatment.

Assessment Needs

Due to the social structure of Palestinian society, and its
emphasis on the extended family, even the severely
mentally ill tend to remain in the family environment and
are cared for by relatives.

It also reinforces the need to strengthen community-based
outpatient services, as well as to build support systems for
the families of those suffering from mental health
problems.

6
To meet the growing mental health needs
of the Palestinian population

A first step would be to integrate mental health services into
primary healthcare.

This will increase access, reduce stigma, increase
acceptability and strengthen monitoring and information
systems.

A second step is to educate community mental health nurses

Mental Health Nursing

Mental health nursing works within nursing models,
utilising nursing care plan, and seeks to care for the whole
person “adopts a holistic model of care”

The emphasis of mental health nursing is on the
development of a therapeutic relationship.

In practice, this means that the nurse should seek to
engage with the person in care in a positive and
collaborative manner that empowers them to draw on their
inner resources in addition to any other treatment they
may be receiving.
