SnapManager 2.0 for Virtual Infrastructure Product Manager Lisa Haut-Mikkelsen Technical Marketing Engineer Amrita Das Virtualization Increases Storage Demands Before Virtualizing Servers* Number of applications per server Number of physical servers After Virtualizing Servers 1 10+ 10+ 1 Number of apps down on storage failure 1 10+ Data lost on dual-disk failure 1x 10x Backup data volume 1x 10x Feasible Maybe not Costly/complex More complex Meeting backup window Disaster recovery Provisioning Slow/complex Storage! = servers * Typical configuration: DAS, RAID 5, tape backup © 2009 NetApp. All rights reserved. 2 Data Protection Challenges for Virtualized Servers Server consolidation expands volume of data More applications per server increases business risk High server utilization reduces spare cycles required for backup Tape is slow, complex, and expensive Architected for what we did yesterday © 2009 NetApp. All rights reserved. Simplifies data protection management Optimizes resource utilization Improves RTO and RPO Leverages NetApp® Snapshot™ and SnapRestore® technologies Scales with your virtual infrastructure 4 SMVI Overview Primary Site SMVI DR Site SMVI Snapshot™ copies SnapMirror® Snapshot copies Per-Job Backup Options: Other Features: –Triggering of VMware® snapshots for application consistency –Triggering of pre/post backup scripts –Exclusion of selected datastores –Inclusion of independent disks –SnapMirror update –Time-based or number-of-copies–based retention period –Customized alert notification –Immediate or scheduled application, or crash-consistent backups of VMs or datastores –Flexible recovery at any level of granularity –Updating of existing SnapMirror relationship at backup completion for integrated DR –Mounting of backups for prerestore content verification –Protocol support: FCP, iSCSI, and NFS © 2009 NetApp. All rights reserved. 5 SMVI Architecture Overview Primary Site Virtual Server Admin DR Site APP APP APP OS OS OS API Storage Pool Storage Pool Policy-based management of Snapshot™ backups, restores, and replication © 2009 NetApp. All rights reserved. 7 SMVI Backup Operation Primary Site 1. SMVI initiates a backup 2. SMVI triggers VMware® snapshots of VMs 3. vCenter creates Virtual Server Admin consistent snapshots of VMs and captures active API transactions in delta files 4. Solution for day to day backup and recovery Back up and restore your VMs instantaneously. Ensure business continuity and protection of all your virtualized data with DR. The RA enables the requester to: See a list of backups Mount a disk from a backup Copy selected files 12 SMVI 2.0 Detail SFR Workflow End User Helpdesk SMVI Admin End User • I lost some files from my VM • I believe I had those files last Thursday. Is there any way I can get back those files? • OK, I have created a ticket, please wait for an e-mail giving you instructions on how to restore files • Receives SFR ticket, enters user & VM information • SMVI server now allows VM to access its own backup & sends an e-mail • End user installs Restore Agent, opens e-mail attachment • Using Restore Agent, looks for backup, mounts disk and uses Explorer to copy the files © 2009 NetApp. All rights reserved. 13 SMVI 2.0 Detail SFR Things to Know Assumptions – A process already exists to initiate a file restore request Helpdesk Ticket system – File restore authorization is done outside of SMVI Terminology – Source VM: VM to which backup is associated and from which files are copied – Destination VM: VM to which files are restored (could be same as originating VM) © 2009 NetApp. All rights reserved. 14 SMVI 2.0 Detail SFR Use Cases Self-service restore Network connectivity exists between destination VM and SMVI server Requester can browse all backups, select files, and restore them to any location within active file system Limited self-service restore No network connectivity between destination VM and SMVI server Administrator mounts disks from selected backups Requester can browse all mounted disks, select files, and restore them to any location within the active file system Administrator-assisted restore Company policy prohibits self-service restore Administrator goes through the self-service restore process for the requester and places files to be restored in an accessible location Requester copies files from accessible location to any location within the active file system © 2009 NetApp. All rights reserved. 15 SMVI 2.0 Detail Other Stats Upgrade/revert – SFR will work with backups created by SMVI 2.x and later – SFR will be disabled for backups created by SMVI 1.x Compatibility – VMware® infrastructure 3.5.x and later – Data ONTAP® 7.2.3 and later (FAS) – Data ONTAP 7.2.4 and later (vFiler®) © 2009 NetApp. All rights reserved.
