Introduction
• Beginning in December 2012, The University of
Alabama has awarded 82% of its undergraduate
degrees within three days of end-of-term
processing using DegreeWorks reporting and
Banner Mass Degree Award.
• We will detail our process and talk about the
lessons learned from this.

• Distributed to all colleges during the semester
− Allows them to correct issues as they review students
• All stakeholders involved
− Registrar’s Office Staff
− Advisors
− College Registrars

• Lead up to commencement
− Entering of last minute exceptions
− Changing of curriculum
• Grades roll on a Tuesday
• After confirmation of grades rolling
− Report run identifying all pending graduation candidates
− Banner data refreshed in DegreeWorks
− CPA data run on all students
− Graduation reports run and distributed to participating colleges

• After confirmation of grades rolling (cont’d)
− Colleges vet information on report
− Send confirmation to Registrar’s Office that all
candidates at 100% are ok to award.

• Mass Degree Award
− Load ids of students who are at 100% into a
temporary table
− Use AppWorx to load that population selection into
Banner
− SHAMDEG
• Use this form to load in students
• Award the Degree
− Any students who aren’t batch awarded are processed
through workflow

Lessons Learned
Impact
• Percentage of degrees awarded within three days
doubled or quadrupled
• Less processing for larger colleges
• More buy-in for DegreeWorks
• Fewer questions from students

• Look at historic data
− Run your reports on past graduation cohorts
− Check for false positives
• Choose your populations wisely
• Use existing processes if available
• Prepare your colleges
