Aviation Administration 8 JPDO IWP Draft NextGen Capabilities • Collaborative Capacity Management • Collaborative Flow Contingency Management • Efficient Trajectory Management • Flexible Separation Management • Effective Information Sharing Environment • Integrated Regulatory & Risk Management • Flexible Airport Facility & Surface Operations Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee October 2008 Federal Aviation Administration 9 FAA “NextGen Implementation Plan” (www.faa.gov/nextgen) • FY08 Accomplishments • Accelerating NextGen • Demonstrating NextGen Concepts • NextGen Mid-Term (2012-18) System Description • Domains – Aircraft and Operator Requirements, Airport, and Air Traffic Operations • Building NextGen’s Infrastructure • Critical Enterprise Architecture Decisions Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee October 2008 Federal Aviation Administration 10 NEWARK LIBERTY AIRPORT LOCAL AREA AUGMENTATION SYSTEM OPERATIONAL DEMONSTRATION Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee October 2008 Federal Aviation Administration 11 Purpose Demonstrate Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) operational capabilities in a complex airspace • Combine on-board RNAV/RNP functionality (e.g. multimode receiver) with LAAS improved straight-in and curved path capabilities for approach & landing to all runway ends • Tool to solve airspace congestion issues • Build user base - controller & pilot operational experience • Reduce airspace separation between current New York Area Airports for more independent operations, including closely spaced parallel runways • “Lessons Learned” may be applied in the New York and Eastern Seaboard area, potentially to other locations Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee October 2008 Federal Aviation Administration 12 Overview • Government Industry Partnership – – – – Federal Aviation Administration The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Continental Airlines (multiple B737-800 NG aircraft) Honeywell (ground system) • Boeing – Aircraft technical integration – Assist with procedure development (Jeppesen) • Single LAAS unit installed at Newark Airport – Serve multiple runway ends at that airport – Could replace multiple ILS facilities – 48 distinct precision and complex approach procedures Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee October 2008 Federal Aviation Administration 13
