THE JWJ WAY &
THE FLORIDA STATE ASSESSMENT
WHAT TO KNOW
WHAT TO DO
You will have 4 passages/sources (several paragraphs) that
are different, but relate to the same topic.
You will respond to a question (writing prompt) by reading
the texts and writing a 4-5 paragraph essay.
The essay will include information from the different texts but
also include YOUR OWN original thoughts and ideas.
You will have 90 minutes to analyze your prompt,
read/annotate the texts, plan, write and finalize your essay.
What should you DO?
-Analyze the prompt.
FOCUS on the purpose. (To inform or argue?)
-Write as if the audience HAS NOT studied the passage.
-Cite evidence.
Identify the source, use quotes.
Be sure your evidence proves your point!
Your evidence should connect and flow logically.

-Elaborate on the what you read to include your own thoughts.
-Use a variety of words/synonyms. DO NOT repeat the same
words/phrases, or transitions.
-Use a more “formal” tone that is more academic-sounding and less
informal.
-Have a consistent organizational pattern throughout.
