Quick or Ceremonial Kick?
Quick Free Kick
o Ball must be properly placed
o Ball must be stationary
o Kicking team has the option of taking kick
quickly
o No whistle is required
“You take a quick kick, you take your chances.”
Quick Free Kick - Risks
Defender moving closer than 10 yards to ball
interferes with kick
• Stop play, caution, retake the kick
Any other circumstance, play continues.
Examples:
• Ball kicked directly to opponent
• Ball kicked and opponent moves sideways to
intercept
• Opponent moves closer to ball but does not
interfere
Ceremonial Free Kick
o Ceremonial kick is appropriate
o Caution or send off
o Treatment of injury on the field
o Request from kicking team
o Needed for game management
o Referee must clearly indicate “whistle”
o Play must be restarted with a whistle

Encroachment
o Failure to respect required distance

Exceptions
Free kick to team within their own goal area – Similar to goal kick
Ball is placed anywhere in goal area
Opponents must be outside of penalty area
Ball is in play when it leaves the penalty area
