MIPA Power I/F and switch cmd from SCU tested but optocoupler on Main
board to be adjusted
SCU Open work:
H/K ADC Levels tuning, MIPA Communication
Partial operation S/W to be burnt in final ROM chipset.
SCU on the AIV CGS bench
AMDL Space
FM–Test Campain CGS Milan, 3
ELENA QM:
-TVTC successfully passed. A malfunction has been detected on
communication but root cause individuated in commercial
component present on QM that will be substituted on PFM with
space qualified one.
-New ITMM of ELENA provided to ESA, waiting for new thermal
I/F from ASD analysis to know thermal mission scenario.
ELENA PFM:
-MCP frame mechanical issue resolved: MCP detector samples
passed vibration and shock tests.
-Shutter functionality and stability verified with Ion beam and low
energy X-ray signal.
-Shutter PFM manufactured and under mechanical motion
calibration. Membranes charging issue requested new ITO
coating. New piezo-encoder system implemented.
-ELENA PFM hardware under manufacturing
-ELENA PFM unit delivery planned
Ion beam_1keV shuttering @43kHz
Soft X-ray shuttering @43kHz
STROFIO is thoroughly tested, fully calibrated
and will be delivered on-time to the Serena suite
Performances of the sensor:
• Sensitivity: nominal (0.13 (cts/s)/(1/cm3))
• Resolution: better than expected (m/∆m > 90)
• FoV: nominal (+/– 10°)
• Mass range: better than required (can identify
elements with masses up to m=150)
• Background rejection: now capable of ~35
rejection
• UV rejection: better than expected (backgr. <
0.1 cts/s)

MIPA status
End-to-end test completed. MIPA QM + SCU QM.
FM fully integrated
FM mech. acceptance level test successfully conducted
FM TVAC qualification level test successfully conducted
FM calibration on-going
Performance parameters
• Energy resolution 5% (nominal)
• Angular resolution 6°..9° x 20°..40° (pixel
dependent) (nominal)
• Mass resolution (mass groups: 1, 2, 4, 8,16, >16
amu/q (nominal))
• VDA taping left prior shipment readiness
MIPA FM in calibration tank
PICAM QM has been successfully
vibrated and shock tested
Thermal vacuum test ongoing,
challenging set-up (90°...+240°C)
Functional testing and calibration
started, to be continued after TV
Angular, energy, and mass
resolution have been characterised
Further improvement of angular and
mass resolution expected by finetuning internal voltages
Flight model hardware under
manufacture
Issues with non-compliant radiation
hardness of front-end ASIC:
requires modification, with
cost and schedule impact
Consequently, QM will be delivered
temporarily as FM substitute

SERENA In-Flight calibration
BC-SRN-PL-00030_01_01_Serena_Calibration_Plan (to be issued)
Cruise Phase
ELENA
ELENA MCP dark counts must be periodically (6 months) monitored to
check functionality.
STROFIO
Cathode commissioning activities during the initialisation of the sensor
about 20 days after the launch. Every six months, monitoring for
sensor outgassing rate control and MCP dark counts.
MIPA and PICAM
MIPA and PICAM solar wind monitoring, by pointing their common FOV
axis to face the solar wind direction (for 8-10 h continuously, at least
every 6 months, possibly with shorter frequency -3 months).
PICAM MCP periodic testing every six months. The measurements
include gain and pulse height spectrum curves. The latter is done using
the dedicated capabilities of the TIMPO32 ASIC in PICAM.
SERENA In-Flight calibration
BC-SRN-PL-00030_01_01_Serena_Calibration_Plan (to be issued)
In orbit Phase
ELENA
The ELENA MCP detectors are long-life MCP: given the expected signal MCP
efficiency will not change significantly. Anyway, MCP background check shall be
done by setting the shutter in closed configuration, so that the MCP dark count rate
will be periodically monitored.
STROFIO
The sensor is intended to operate continuously during all orbits around Mercury. So
at present, STROFIO does not require any calibration activity. But the one regularly
planned to asses gain characteristics of the MCP, long term stability of the high
voltage power supplies, molecular background from the spacecraft.
MIPA
No dedicated in-flight calibrations are foreseen. CEM performance is monitored
using standard science data.
PICAM
PICAM shall perform a regular check of its potentials and MCP detectors.
The solar wind can be monitored by PICAM and MIPA for inter-calibrations between ion
instruments. MIPA will include this test in the nominal operational procedures.
