Narrative Writing
➢ The
first important thing to remember
about a narrative essay is that it tells a
story. The author may write about
➢ - an experience or event from his or her
past
➢ - a recent or an ongoing experience or
event
➢ - something that happened to
somebody else, such as a parent or a
grandparent
➢ The
personal narrative takes a moment, a
singular moment, and completely EXPANDS it.
ZOOM in on ONE moment.
➢ Show,
➢ Don’t
DO NOT tell!!
be obvious!!!
➢ Not
a personal narrative: Telling the story of your
8th grade science class that changed your
perspective about biology and life
➢ Personal
narrative: The one day and moment in
science class when you looked through a
microscope for the 1st time.
➢ The
writing in a narrative essay should be
lively and interesting.
➢ Engage the reader's interest by adding
details or personal observations.
➢ Sharing personal thoughts and details
invites the reader into author's world and
makes the story more personal and more
interesting.
➢ Use descriptive language (verbs,
adjectives, and adverbs)
