SASIDs: an Update (with Frustrations)

News from the Student Identifier Management Unit

Continuing Integration of SASIDs Within CDE

► Migrant Education Program ► Prevention and Initiatives ► Homeless Education

Migrant Education Program

► We took all Migrant Students from the NGS Migrant data base who didn’t have a SASID and tried to find an existing one for them using RITSRead-only and the Optimizer.

 We found an exisiting SASID for 73% (10,239) of all Migrant children (14,066) submitted.

► We are asking districts to verify CDE case management is correct.

 A mistake now may make it hard to fix later.

► Only new Migrant Students will need district’s help in getting SASIDs assigned.

Prevention and Initiatives

Short term outcomes for strategies for at-risk kids.

 53 programs around the state can utilize SASIDs to help their mission.

  Look at the web site www.cde.state.co.us

.

Click the At-Risk / Prevention button.

Click the Expelled and At Risk Student Services Grant hyperlink.

 Working with kids who are struggling, but we can’t tell how they are doing after they leave.

 If the kids don’t visit back, they can’t tell.

 This is a way for teachers/administrators/counselors/folks in the community (i.e. mental health services) to tell.

Using SASID we’ll get a better idea of how they are doing.

 National Center for School Engagement is a state non-profit that does technical assistance with CASA START programs.

 National truancy prevention project.

They want to start efforts with sites with a newly awarded grant in 05-06 for four years in a few districts:  Monte Vista, Rio Grande, Mesa County Valley, Park County RE-2, two CASA START start sites in Adams County 12 Five Star Schools and a truancy project in 5 districts in Adams County.

Bear with us for one year, see what they can provide.

The Optimizer has Promise, I Promise

► Douglas County and Colorado Springs       Used Optimizer and reduced their case management by 65% All Adds make our job faster and more accurate.

Reduced wait times during the busy Student October time period.

Reduced duplicates created.

Find duplicates you didn’t know you had.

You can’t win if you don’t play.

Known Frustrations

► ► The RITSRead-Only file submitted to ADE is used in the last step.

 rr1420.26a is submitted with 1,000 kids to RITSRead Only in ADE.

     rr1420.daa is returned from ADE as static report with matches.

Save rr1420.daa as rr1420.txt so Microsoft Access can read it.

Input rr1420.txt

into the Optimizer, complete SASID check by marking kids who match.

Preparing RITS batch file to make your updates requires rr1420.26a saved as rr1420.txt

.

These files look the same!

File management helps reduce confusion.

Frustrations (cont.)

► Each Optimizer database keeps data only if it isn’t overwritten.

  You refresh the Optimizer by overwriting previous efforts.

If you need to keep these ► Export your SUBMISSION_TBL, or ► Download and create a new Optimizer database for the next submission.

Duplicate SASIDs

► New Screens on the Web site ease the merging process for CDE.

► Mass Merge coming.

► 850 Known Duplicates being fixed.

► ~ 500 Reported Duplicates to be researched.

► Hope of split CSAP scores being rectified.

Thank You!

► We appreciate the opportunity to get word out through the CSUG Conference.
