K-12 Common Core Standards
• Final Released June 2, 2010 • Authors - educators, content experts, researchers, national organizations, parents, community/business leaders • Organized by CCSSO and NGA • Currently Math and ELA/Literacy • CC Science standards are in process but there are no plans to develop CC Social Studies standards at this point • College and Career Readiness Standards incorporated • Revisions will be made on a set review cycle
Common Core Standards Criteria
• Aligned with college and work expectations • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills • Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards • Informed by top-performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society • Evidence and/or research-based (learning progressions) • Developmentally appropriate, cumulative progression of skills and understandings
CCS Theory
Focus on core conceptual understandings and procedures starting in the early grades
gives students the opportunity to master the standards enables teachers to take the time needed to teach core concepts and procedures well
The promise of common standards:
the standards must address the problem of a curriculum that is “a mile wide and an inch deep.” Standards must be deeper not wider
Implementation Timeline
• 2010: Standards are released • 2010-11: Exploration of the CCS • 2011-12: Strategic Initiatives for implementing the CCS • 2012 – 13: Strategic Initiatives for implementing the CCS • 2013-14: Pilot Assessments • 2014-15: Accountability for the CCS
CCS: Mathematics Greater Focus and Coherence
• Focus on key topics at each grade level • Coherent progressions across grade levels.
• Standards for Mathematical Practice
Balance of concepts and skills
• Content standards require both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.
• CCS concentrate early learning of mathematics on the number and geometry strands with less emphasis on data analysis and minimal exposure to algebra • CCS focus on fewer content domains within a grade range • Specific domains will be taught much more deeply

Common Core Standards: ELA
• Grade ranges for ELA, separate list of developmentally appropriate skills aligned with the College and Career Readiness Standards (Anchor Standards). The mathematics document doesn’t have this.

CCS and Special Populations

No special standard sets for students eligible for services under IDEA How these standards are taught and assessed will be critical for this group o Present information in multiple ways o Instructional accommodations changes in materials and procedures within the CCS framework o Assistive technology devices and services will be key •
English Language Learners
Materials to support students will be key in helping support the learning of this population
State Standards vs CCS
• Among current state standards, some states’ standards will be very similar to the CCS and there will be a number of states who find they have large gaps between their state standards and the new CCS • Assessment consortia have been created to build assessment systems to support the CCS with guiding and participating states • CCS require selected response, constructed response, and performance tasks or events

Interim Assessments for Growth
• Ability to monitor estimated and actual growth for reading/ELA and mathematics via customized reports: • Iowa Form E to the Interims • Between each Interim Assessment • Criterion Design with the added bonus of leveraging the Iowa Scale • Administer through Riverside Portal • Web-based prebuilt reports with ad-hoc capabilities • If also a DataDirector customer the reporting features there will allow for more in-depth comparisons of granular performance and further ad-hoc reporting capabilities
