SCIENCE LINK - Research and Innovation in the BSR

 SCIENCE LINK is a network between large-scale Research Infrastructure of photon and neutron sources and users, aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the Baltic Sea Region. The network also includes scientific institutes, universities and regional organisations that serve as service and promoting units .  SCIENCE LI NK is part-fina nced by the Baltic Sea Region Programme from 2012 to 2014.  17 partners from the 8 EU-Baltic Sea States are involved, one Russian institution is associate partner © Science Link 2012 2

Role of Large-scale Research Infrastructures

History: Particle Physics Today: RIs acting more and more as user facilities (RIs provide beams – universities, institutes and RIs operate experiments) PETRA III hall Material Science: HZG, DESY Life Science: European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Max Planck Society, Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, DESY

Application Fields of RI in Photon and Neutron Science

Nanostructures Molecular Structure Surfaces Reactions … Areas of high technology and knowledge driven industry Source: Dosch, Van de Voorde (ed.): GENNESYS - Grand European Iniative on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

Mobility ~2000 users in photon science at DESY 50% national, 50% abroad In general, RIs attract scientists from all over the world Macro-regional structure: High percentage of Scientists from Denmark and Poland

Baltic Sea region – one of the world-leading Cluster of RI in Photon and Neutron Science  International networks include commercial users as well  But: Small number of commercial users (e.g. about 4 % commercial users at MAX IV Laboratory) Existing: MAX IV Laboratory (Lund), DESY (Hamburg), HZB (Berlin), PNPI (St. Petersburg) Upcoming: European Spallation Source (Lund), European XFEL (Hamburg), Polish Synchrotron

Promoting innovation in the BSR

 Open calls for companies (3nd call in April 2013)  Access for companies to RIs, especially SMEs  Companies can apply for funding for measurements at the RIs  Application involves a 200 words description of the proposed project  RIs support preparation, measurements and analysis of results  In the first 2 calls 31 companies as applicants, 70% SME, many different branches © Science Link 2012 9

Promoting innovation in the BSR

 Establishment of contact and consultation points in all EU BSR countries  Analysis of regional needs, regional advisory groups  Structures at RIs for supporting the needs of commercial users  Establishment of structures for cooperation between RIs - universities - commercial users  Part of the flagship project „Baltic Science Link“ within the implementation of the EUSBSR © Science Link 2012 10

Conferences

 27 September 2012 in Krakow, Poland  11-13 June 2013, mid-term conference in St. Petersburg, Russia  - dissemination of results of the calls and studies, discussion of political goals  February 2014, final conference in Hamburg © Science Link 2012 11
