The New Colossus
Emma Lazarus
Notes
• This poem was written as a
donation to an auction of
art and literature.
• The auction raised money
for funds for the Statue of
Liberty.
• This poem is now engraved
on a bronze plaque and
mounted inside the lower level
of the pedestal of the Statue
of Liberty.
• Emma Lazarus was an
American poet from New York
City. She lived from 1849 to
1887.
• The title of the poem refers
to the Colossus of Rhodes,
which was a statue of the
Greek god Helios (god of
the sun.) It was destroyed
in 226 BC from an
earthquake.
