Before you begin ..
• Taste is an individual's personal and cultural patterns of
choice and preference. Taste is drawing distinctions
between things such as styles, manners, consumer
goods and works of art and relating to these. Social
inquiry of taste is about the human ability to judge
what is beautiful, good and proper.
• What is good or bad taste?
- Good judgement when it comes to style, manners, or
things that are said (see above).

Comparisons
• We usually make comparisons with more, less
and –er.
She is tougher than him.
• You can also make comparisons with “as...as”
= same.
She is as tough as him.
• You can also use “not as ... As” = less than.
He is not as tough as her.
Grammar Supplement.
As + (Adjective / noun phrase / adverb) + as ...
Also notice that the as..as comparison is always
followed by a noun phrase (my sneakers,
jeans), a verb phrase (she should, I did) or an
adjective (possible).
As Adjective As
• We usually compare two things which have the
same quality with as...as.
• My daughter is as beautiful as my wife.
• My son is not as fat as my wife.
• Drinking water is twice as expensive as petrol
these days.
• Possible adj. = popular, good, difficult, new,
beautiful, clever, inexpensive, angry, calm,
chubby, skinny.
How are your classes? Are they as difficult as
last semester? Is your schedule as tough as last
semester? Are your professors as good as … ?
Pick two things, places, people and compare.
As Adverb As
• We can compare two actions with as adverb
as.
• The little boy can run as fast as me.
• She went out of the door as quietly as she
could.
Inequality: verb + adverbs
• It doesn't work as well as we'd hoped.
Michael didn't play as well this week as he did
last week.
inequality: quantity
• This phone doesn't have as many features as
the other one.
(The other phone has more features than this
one.)
My ticket didn't cost as much as yours.
(Your ticket cost more than mine.)
Inequality: noun phrases
We can use not + such + noun phrase + as to
compare things using noun phrases.
The journey to London doesn't take such a long
time as it used to.
(The journey to London used to take longer.)
I don't have such an interesting job as Julia.
(Julia has a more interesting job than I do.)
