The Election Process
Right to Vote: 18 years old and a Canadian citizen Timing: must be held at least every 5 years
Why are elections called?
PM reaches the end of his/her term PM resigns Coalition Government no longer tenable A vote of non-confidence PM believes he/she can win (high approval ratings, opposing parties are not doing well in the approval ratings)
1. Dissolution of Parliament The Prime Minister asks the Governor General to dissolve parliament and call an election.
Must be held within 50 days of dissolution.
2. Enumeration The preparation of the voters list before an election.
Chief Electoral Officer – responsible for the running of the election.
Enumerators – check the voters list to make sure it is accurate.
3. Nomination The selection of candidates for each riding by the parties.
Party leader must officially endorse the candidate.
Candidate’s name is then listed on the ballot.
4. Campaigning The political parties present their platforms - the issues and promises of what they will do if voted in.
5. Balloting (aka Election Day) Voting is done at polling stations.
6. Tabulation The ballots are counted and the results are announced to the public.
