Construction
• Stands on site of Gallo-Roman
temple to Jupiter, Christian basilica,
Romanesque church
• Construction began in 1163 during
Louis VII’s reign
• Completed around 1345
• Choir complete in 1182, nave in
1208, west front and towers 12251250
Destruction and Restoration
• During reign of Louis XIV and XV, many
tombs and stained glass destroyed in
modernization movement
• Many treasures destroyed and stolen
during French revolution
• Restoration program 1845-1868;
construction of spire and sacristy
• Restoration 1991-2001; maintenance and
restoration
