• Consider the following • 70% of the planet is covered by water • An estimated 90% of world trade is transported by ships • Annual value of goods transported by sea £17 billion (that’s £17 million, million, million) • Serviced by 81,584 ships of varying shapes and sizes • • Directly employing @ 13.5 million people across the world A continually growing industry • • From a UK perspective • We are an island and would not survive without shipping • London is still considered the major maritime centre of the world • Southampton is one of the most productive ports in the world 1980: 3.7 billion tonnes 2013: 9.6 billion tonnes So what is shipping and maritime business?
A continually evolving and growing, multi billion pound global industry, based on supply and demand, working across cultural divides, requiring a multitude of different skills and attributes within its workforce.
Why is the industry so successful?

Economy of Scale.
This Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) can carry 310,000 tonnes of crude oil After refining this produces about 361.4 million litres of fuel • Enough to fill the tanks of 5.56 million cars!!
BSc (Hons) Maritime Business BSc (Hons) Shipping and Port Management
• Both courses provide students with a strong foundation and underpinning knowledge of the maritime and shipping world with 1 st year units being common to both degrees • Transport Geography, Introduction to Law, Business Skills Development, Managing Financial Information, Maritime Business, Maritime Operations • This is then built upon during year 2 and 3 at which time • Maritime Business students follow a more business centric approach • International Trade, Law, Finance and Risk Management • Shipping and Port Management students follow an operational and management pathway • Supply chain management, project management, sustainable development and operational practice • The courses are accredited by: • Chartered Institute of Shipping • Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport
• • The degrees were developed in conjunction with industry • Focusing on employability • the key skills and knowledge they were looking for And our alumni • What they felt had been of benefit and additional skills they felt would have enhanced their employability • Key Skills developed include: • Team work • Cross cultural understanding • Communication – written, oral and visual • Planning • Time management • Report writing
Entry Requirements
• Entry requirements 200 CATs which ideally include 2 ‘academic’ subjects studied to A2 level • Geography, Business studies, History, Psychology, Sociology, Languages, Sciences, Maths, English, Economics……….etc
• Why no specific subject areas? • We are much more interested in ensuring that prospective students who are interested in learning about shipping and the maritime world have an opportunity to do so
