National Symbols and Models of
Citizenship

Patriotic Symbol
• A patriotic symbol stands for the ideas the
people believe in, such as freedom.
Our Country’s Flag
• The US Flag has
changed over time.
Original Flag for the 13
colonies.
The Pledge of Allegiance
• The pledge is a
promise citizens
make to the flag and
all it stands for.
National Anthem
• The National Anthem
is called “The Star
Spangled Banner.”
• It is written about the
US flag.
• It was written by
Francis Scott Key.
Liberty Bell
• Cracked the first time
that it was rung.
• They made a new bell
and it cracked.
• The Liberty Bell is a
symbol for freedom.
• On display in
Philadelphia .
The Bald Eagle
• The eagle is our
national bird.
• Symbol of strength.
• Ben Franklin didn’t
want the eagle, he
wanted the turkey.
The Great Seal
• Stars represent the
13 colonies.
• Arrows represent
strength.
• Olive branch means
peace.
• E Pluribus Unum is
motto of the US.
Means “out of many,
one.”
Bill of Rights
• Names many of the
freedoms that belong
to all American is:
– Freedom of Speech
– Freedom of Religion
– Freedom of the Press
• The Bill of Rights is
located in the US
Constitution.
Famous Americans
Thomas Jefferson
• Third President
• Jefferson worked
hard to make sure
citizens had basic
freedoms like
Speech, Religion, and
of the Press.
Harriet Tubman
• Harriet was born a
slave.
• After Harriet escaped,
she would later return
to help more than 300
slaves to escape to
freedom.
Helen Keller
• An illness caused
Helen to lose both
sight and hearing.
• Helen was unable to
communicate.
• Anne Sullivan, her
teacher, developed a
way to communicate
with Helen by making
signs in Helen’s hand.

• King spoke out against
laws he thought were
unfair.
• King encouraged
