An update to the SEG seismic data
interchange standard

What it is
• An expansion of SEG Y with a high degree of
backward compatibility to
– address current limitations of
• sample rates, trace length & traces/ensemble
• precision in temporal and spatial values
– allow any number of user-defined trace headers
What it is not
• A field recording format
• A non-seismic data exchange format
• A brand new format, e.g. XML-based
What else
• Efficient use of high-performance tape
• Coordinate reference information coordinated
with SEG D rev 3.0
• Clarification/corrections of documentation
Where we are
• Formal subcommittee to kick off at 2012 SEG
Annual Meeting
• Initial SEG Y rev 2.0 strawman draft
• Generic encapsulation proposal to support
