Students’ Union – Student Academic
Representatives (StARs) 2014-15
What are StARs?
• Student Academic Representatives (StARs) are elected to represent
students on their course’ views and provide feedback on their
academic experience to the faculty.
• StARs are a vital communication channel between the
university/faculty and the students
• StARs attend Couse committee meetings
• Faculty StARs sit on the Student Union’s Student Council
• The StARs scheme is a partnership between the Students’ Union &
University
• StARs are offered full training and support
What else might a StAR do?
• Speak, listen and research the issues that matter to your course mates
• Help students to raise issues of concern to your faculty
• Build a constructive, working relationship with your Couse Leader,
Associate Dean and Dean.
• Communicate information to students and from students to the
University
• Lobby and campaign, together with the Students’ Union officers on
various campaigns
• Get involved in the UK-wide student can course rep/StAR movement
via e.g. the NUS
Why should you become a StAR?
• You believe that students should have a genuine say in the decisions
that affect their experiences at London Met
• You believe that you should take an active part in your own education
• You are determined to leave London Met with more than just a degree
• You wish to get more involved in representation and the Students’
Union
• You wish to work with others to help improve students satisfaction and
the student experience
• You wish to improve you skills which will make you more employable
What else can I gain?
• Gain transferable skills that will equip you for the future and help your
personal and career development
• Improve your employability
• Gain valuable experience to go on your CV for the future
• Make a real difference! Give a real voice to students and actively
influence the decision-making process
• Receive training, support and a certificate to acknowledge your
contribution
• Meet new people, make new friends and help others
• An introduction to Student politics !
