Testing of BOP Multi-Seals
Field Bulletin No 023
Issue A – June 2011
Operating Note
• It is important to note that when testing
Phuel BOP multi-seals, in preparation for
operation, the testing is to be performed
without a test rod. The seals have been
specifically designed to be tested blind.
• The use of test rods may cause damage to
the inner seal and these must then be
replaced before use in well operations.
Background
• Some BOP manufacturers recommend
that a test rod should be used to minimise
damage to their inner seal
• This is a result of a fundamental difference
in the design and is a correct statement for
their seals.
• This practice cannot be directly applied to
Phuel BOP multi-seals
Explanation
Grooved Multi-Seal
• Other manufacturers use grooved multi-seals
• When tested blind the rubber must ‘flow’ to
seal the groove
• The ‘flow’ weakens the rubber
• By using test rods the ‘flow’ is reduced and so
the seal life can be extended
• This is why they recommend using test rods
• Phuel multi-seals do not have a groove
• This allows testing blind without ‘flow’
• Testing with a test rod causes ‘flow’ and
weakens the rubber
• This is why Phuel requires testing blind
Phuel Multi-Seal
Action
• Ensure that relevant personnel
responsible for testing are aware that
Phuel BOP’s must always be tested
without the use of a test rod – otherwise
the seals must be replaced after the test.
